The sun shone brightly on the annual rural schools’ athletics championships held on Friday at the Vogel Street athletics complex. Students from the Cambridge rural schools took part in ten events including sprints, throws and jumps. Well doem to Cam who was runner up in the Year 4 boys overall championship and to our relay team who finished third in a hotly contested race.

BP Technology Challenge
Today we were represented by two teams at the BP Technology Challenge in Hamilton. Our teams had to use limited resources in limited time to create structures according to set criteria. Both teams did exeptionally well with the senior team of Jake, Owen, Erika and Gemma taking out first place for their construction of a very impressive Christmas tree. Congratulations to both teams and their coach, Miss Hanks.
Friends, Romans, countrymen…
Yesterday we held our annual speech competition. All five finalists delivered excellent speeches. Each speaker spoke confidently and kept the audience entertained with fascinating facts, hilarious humour and/or amazing arguments.
Gemma spoke of her six years at Karapiro and how much the school has influenced the wonderful person she has become. Erika extolled the virtues of underwear and made us realise just how we take take our incredible undergarments for granted! Joseph convinced us that the humble goldfish is in fact everybody’s ideal pet. Owen shared his many ambitions as to what he hopes to achieve when he grows up. Our Eventual winner James shared his secrets about how you can successfully make your younger siblings life miserable!
James and Joseph will now represent us at the annual Rotary club speech competition in Cambridge next month. We wish both boys the best of luck!
Parent Power!
Congratulations to the Karapiro parents and friends’ team who competed so well at last weekend’s Karapiro Ironman. The team of Mike Davey (2000m swim), Don Ritchie (90 km bike) and Caroline Webbon (21 km run) completed the race in a combined time of 5 hours and 17 minutes to win their age category! Don and Caroline both achieved personal best times and the team raised over $400 for our school through sponsorship. What an excellent result all round!
Two of our students, Cam and Mac, also competed very well in the kid’s duathalon held at the same time, with Cam finishing 4th overall and Mac 15th. What a great effort boys!
Bike Day with Big Foot

Bicycle fun in the sun!
We enjoyed a great day with the team from Big Foot Adventures learning all about bicycle safety and working on our bike handling skills. Students from Maungatautari and Whitehall Schools joined us for the morning. We would like to thank Nick and Theo from Big Foot for teaching us new skills and also Linda from Road Sense and Megan from Waipa District Council for sponsoring the event!
READ all about it!

Reading graph for the end of term 3, 2009.
We are very excited about the above graph. The blue circles represent the students at our school. The circle is placed at the student’s chronological age. The green square above the blue circle shows the reading age of each child. Red squares indicate where children reading below their chronological age level. The grey wavy lines show the years above or below each child’s chronological age.
The GREAT news is that EACH and EVERY one of our students is reading at or above their chronological age. Some students are several years above. This is an achievement that all students, staff and parents can be proud of. Well done everybody!!!
Rowing Parade

Waiting to cheer on the rowers.
We took a bus into Cambridge to cheer on the New Zealand rowers who did so well at the recent World Championships. The celebration also marked ONE YEAR to go until the World Rowing Championships are held in our backyard on Lake Karapiro!
