Cross Country Championships 2011

Blake storms home to win the 8 year old boys' race.

Our annual rural schools’ cross country championships was a resounding success with some fantastic racing around the Mighty River Karapiro Domain course. We are the hosts of this major sporting event and received some wonderful feedback from competitors and spectators alike. We would like to congratulate everyone who finished the demanding course and give special recognition to Blake Seavill who was the overall 8 year old boys champion and to Georgina Jervis and Quinn Blundell who were runners up in their respective events.Well done also to Connor, Sam R, Rebecca, Rose, Cam, Sam H, Jared and Sarah who achieved top ten finishes in some very big fields.

Earlier in the day our junior students raced against the Horahora School juniors and did an amazing job. Sam S, Aoife, Emily and Wade won their races and Nicole, Reianne, Montique, Ryan, Jacob, Daniel and Lucas achieved top three places.

Thank you also to the amazing group of parents who ran the BBQ and lunch stall all day. We are all looking forward to next year’s event.

We are sailing…

The year six students round the mark.

Our year 5 and 6 students enjoyed their latest sailing and kayaking sessions on the beautiful Lake Karapiro. The year 6 students showed how much they have learned by sailing superbly in light and shifting winds. We would like to thank Craig from Cambridge Sailing Club and Richard from Boatshed Kayaks for providing the instruction and the boats.

Flying the flag at the Rowing World Champs!

Jacob, Jaysen, James, Etana and Mathew get in some practice.

Our five student flag bearers are getting very excited as the Rowing World Championships draw nearer. Jacob, Jaysen, James, Etana and Mathew have been selected to carry out some of the national flags of the competing countries at the world champs. They spent two days over Labour Weekend at rehearsals for the show. Keep an eye out for them on TV or better still head along to the opening ceremony on Saturday and catch the action LIVE!

Cycleway opening.

Ready to roll!
Ready to roll!

A great team of Karapiro students, staff and parents took part in the opening of the Karapiro cyleway on Saturday. We enjoyed the 10 km return journey to Lake Karapiro along the new cycleway and were lucky enough to pick up a spot prize of the Great New Zealand songbook, which will be a welcome addition to the library! Well done to the Perry Foundation and the Waipa District council on this great initiative. See www.michaeljeans.com for more photos and video!

Our Czech mates!

Mirka, Hana, Ulsta and the Karapiro students.

Today we had the great pleasure of welcoming Czech Republic rowing champion Mirka Knapkova who took time out of her preparations for the rowing world championships at Karapiro later this month, to talk to our students. Mirka is one of the favourites to win the single sculls at the champs. Mirka was joined by her training partner Ulsta, physiotherapist Hana and coach Tomas. Ulsta and Tomas spent some time learning a few rugby skills with our senior students. We would like to wish them lots of luck at the championships and we will certainly be cheering them on!

Sailing Away!

Setting sail for adventure

Lake Karapiro will soon be the centre of attention for the upcoming rowing world championships but in the meantime our students are making the most of the fantastic aquatic playground in our backyard. Sailing and kayaking are activities that now make up part of our school’s physical education programme. All senior students spend sessions on the lake developing practical craft handling skills and exploring this important part of our environment. The board of trustees use the government’s new ‘Kiwisport’ funding to minimise the cost to our students and we work closely with Project Energize, The Boatshed Kayaks and the Cambridge Sailing Club to provide equipment and instructors. An added bonus for our students is watching the New Zealand rowing team hard at work as we explore the lake

Parent Power!

Mike, Caroline and Don at the finish.

Congratulations to the Karapiro parents and friends’ team who competed so well at last weekend’s Karapiro Ironman. The team of  Mike Davey (2000m swim), Don Ritchie (90 km bike) and Caroline Webbon (21 km run) completed the race in a combined time of 5 hours and 17 minutes to win their age category! Don and Caroline both achieved personal best times and the team raised over $400 for our school through sponsorship. What an excellent result all round!

Two of our students, Cam and Mac, also competed very well in the kid’s duathalon held at the same time, with Cam finishing 4th overall and Mac 15th. What a great effort boys!

Once again we hosted the annual Cambridge Rural Schools Cross Country Championships at the beautiful Lake Karapiro Domain. Approximately 400 students from ten schools competed in the various age races with some very close finishes. This year the course was altered because of construction for the 201o Rowing World Championships to be help on the lake. We would like to congratulate Jake Mechell, this year’s ten year old boys champion. We would like to thank all of the marshalls who helped to run the day as well as the fantastic parents who kept the food stall producing all of that yummy food!
